Burgess Shale The Burgess Shale is one of Canada's most significant historical findings and has earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. The name refers to a number of fossils found in the Walcott Quarry that date as far back as 500 million years, at a time when the town of Field would have been part of the sea floor.
